Demounter Canada

The Goldilocks De-mounter

The homemade de-mounter stuck out at a right angle from a steel post. No matter how you looked at it, it left something to be desired. Awkward, hard to use, and with an appetite for production time, it was not a good match for the company’s needs. The extent of the challenge it presented became obvious when Sean Sawa, Sales Director at Anderson & Vreeland Canada, visited a shop that was part of a large North American packaging company with more than a dozen facilities across the U.S. and Canada.

After seeing the homemade de-mounter in action and the size of plates the shop handles, Sawa suggested the AV Model 77 Sleeve Plate Demounter from Anderson & Vreeland. The Model 77 accommodates sleeves from 3.5” to 12” in diameter and up to 77” long; more than the customer required. But the customer said the Model 77 was too large for the space available.

“I quickly realized the customer needed a unique solution and that Anderson & Vreeland’s engineering capabilities could develop and build a practical, customized solution that was within the customer’s reach,” recounts Sawa.

He called in A&V engineers and the team delved into the details. Drawing on the operation and features of the Model 77, A&V engineers looked at ways to create a smaller and simpler version of the same machine. Three roll lengths and their respective inner diameters drove the parameters for a new device along with ease of use for de-mounting both plates and sticky-back. Portability was added to the feature list so the new machine could be moved to differ-ent presses and stored when not in use.

The result arrived about two months later in the form of a portable de-mounter about three feet long that accommodates three different sleeve sizes, operates at different speeds, and can be moved to where it is needed or stored in a spot out of the action on the shop floor.

Just Right

As Goldilocks might say, the new demounter is just right.

“The demounter helps the customer produce jobs more quickly, minimizes plate damage, and eases the removal of both used plates and stickyback tape,” says Sawa. “It also brought an advantage we didn’t expect: the customer is also using it for mounting new plates and stickyback. This increases efficiency for both the start and end of jobs and adds value to the investment.”

Entirely engineered and built by Anderson & Vreeland Canada, the yet-to-be-named new machine is just one example of how A&V’s deep understanding of flexographic printing and customer needs can be leveraged to provide ground-up engineering and manufacturing of a specialized product. Virtually no other supplier will take on the challenge of designing, building, and supporting a bespoke machine for a single customer.
